What is the difference between ROCOR and ROCA?

Somebody else can give a better answer, I'm sure, but here is my American convert understanding:

In the beginning, no difference.  The Russian Church Abroad has also historically been known as:
Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia
Russian Orthodox Church Abroad
Russian Orthodox Church in Exile

My experience is that ROCOR is the favored acronym.

Around the year 2000 the ROCOR synod started talking about union with the Moscow Patriarch [MP].  This caused divisions.  An early division took the name ROCIE.

Today there are 2 groups using the name ROCOR [or ROCA].
– the first group is the smaller of the two, which did not submit to the union with the MP in 2007.  [Metropolitan Agafangel]
– the second is the larger of the two, which did join the MP.  [Met. Hilarion].  Many refer to this group as the ROCOR-MP
