Website Review

Caution
bogus "royal path" blog
blog owner highly confused

This new blog calls itself the Royal Path and this is not the Royal Path.  The blog owner has no connection to our ROCOR or any of the Sister Churches.

The Sister Churches are not connected in any way to the Milan Synod by any stretch of the imagination.

Not in every case, but in general there is something wrong with a monastic being on the internet.  It can be an indication that something is out of proper order.  An email address is ok, but a public presence such as a personal blog or participating in open forum discussions is unbecoming to the monastic state, it is more the behavior of a layman.   There are times when it is proper, such as when a hierarch uses the internet to be accessible to his flock.   Be discerning.

It Is Truly Meet

It Is Truly Meet
Translated from the Athonite Patericon [Moscow 1897] vol. 1, pp. 482-485
and published in Orthodox Life [Jordanville] 1980 #2

In his panegyric [writing of praise] on the Fathers that shone forth in the Holy Mountain, St. Nicodemus the Haghiorite [of Mount Athos], of holy memory, also made mention of a blessed monk whose name is not known, who living in subjection to his elder, was vouchsafed to offer hospitality in his cell [hut] to a stranger who was the Archangel Gabriel himself, and to hear from him the compunctionate hymn to the Mother of God:  "It is truly meet to bless thee, the Theotokos [birth-giver of God], ever-blessed and most blameless and the Mother of our God...  This apparition took place during the reign of the co-Emperors, the brothers Basil and Constantine, surnamed Porphyrogenitus, sons of Romanus the Younger, during the patriarchate of Nicholas Chrysoberges [984-995].  An account of the apparition was set down by Hieromonk [priest-monk] Seraphim Thynolos, Protos of the Holy Mountain, in 1548.

Not far from Karyes, in a steep defile [narrow valley], there stands among the monastic habitations a certain kellia [monastic settlement] with a small church dedicated to the Dormition [repose] of the Mother of God and in the kellia lived an elder with his disciple.

It came to pass that the elder, desiring to hear the all-night vigil for Sunday in the church in Karyes, departed thence; but the pious disciple having received from him a command to perform the service at home, remained to watch over the kellia.  As night fell, he suddenly heard a knock at the door of the kellia and, opening it, beheld a monk unknown to him, whom he received cordially and with honor.  When the time came to perform the service, they both began with fear and reverence to offer prayerful psalmody unto the Lord God.

The night service passed in its usual order and, on finishing the canon, standing before the icon of the Mother of God, they began to chant:  "More honorable than the cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the seraphim..."  The resident monk, full of heartfelt reverence for the all-hymed one, sang the customary ancient hymn composed by St. Cosmas, bishop of Maium, beginning with the words, "More honorable..."  But his wondrous guest, beginning the moving song otherwise, chanted thus with an angelic voice:  "It is truly meet to bless thee the Theotokos, ever blessed and all-immaculate and Mother of our God..."  -- and to this he added "More honorable than the cherubim..." and the rest.

"How wonderful!"  exclaimed the resident chanter, moved to tears by the new hymn and also amazed by the unearthly quality of the hymn which he was hearing fort he first time.  "Marvelous!  But we sing only 'More honorable' and neither we nor those who came before us have ever heard of such a hymn as "It is truly meet' until this time.  But I beg you, " he said to the miraculous stranger, "write down this hymn for me that thus I too may magnify the Theotokos."

"Very well,"  assented the stranger.  "Give me paper and ink, and I will write down this hymn for you from memory."

"Forgive me, brother," said the monk in a spirit of humility and simplicity, "occupying ourselves with prayer and manual labor, we rarely have need of paper and ink, and therefore we have neither the one or the other at this time."

"Then fetch me, at least, a slab of stone," continued he who had appeared.

When the monk had brought the slab, the stranger began to write on it with his finger all of the above-mentioned hymn to the Theotokos.  Having inscribed all the words of the hymn legibly and clearly on the stone, he handed it to the monk and said, "Henceforth and forever sing in this manner: ye and all Orthodox Christians."  An in an instant he vanished.  It had been Gabriel the Archangel.

Joyous trembling seized the humble monk on seeing the miraculously  inscribed slab of stone.  Reading through the words of the hymn several times, he committed them to memory, and by dawn the new hymn sounded on the lips of the pious anchorite [recluse].  On returning home, the elder was impressed with the new hymn and questioned his novice as to where he had learned thus to sing.  Then the latter related to the elder all that had taken place, showing him the slab itself, replete with miraculous inscription.  The elder listened attentively to his disciple's extraordinary tale of the strange visitor's appearance in the cell, and long examined the slab inscribed by the angel, reading over the wondrous inscription many times.  Later, taking the stone, they showed it to the council of elders and informed them of the details of the wondrous event.  Then all, with one mouth and one heart, glorified the Lord and His all-pure Mother, and chanted the new hymn to her.

Thenceforth the angelic hymn "It is truly meet..." has come into general usage in the Orthodox Church.  The icon before which she was hymned by the archangel was transferred to the Protaton in Karyes, where even to this day it can be seen in the High Place of the sanctuary.  The stone slab upon which the hymn was inscribed was taken to the patriarch and emperor in Constantinople when report was made of what had occurred.  The kellia is known on the Holy Mountain, even until the present time, as "Axion estin..." in memory of that miraculous event, and the event itself is commemorated and celebrated on Athos on June 11  [June 11 Julian/June 24 Gregorian]

tone 4
Rejoice Virgin Theotokos
Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee
Blessed art thou among women
And bless is the fruit of thy womb
For thou hast born the Savior of our souls

tone 2
It is truly meet to bless thee the Theotokos
Ever-blessed and most blameless
And the Mother of our God
More honorable than the cherubim
And more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim
Who without defilement gavest birth to God the Word
The very Theotokos thee do we magnify

Also interesting is the story of how we received the Trisagion Prayer.  It was given to a boy who was bodily lifted up to heaven during an earthquake in 5th century Constantinople.  The event is commemorated by the Church on Sept. 25 Julian/ Oct. 8 Gregorian

√ Bl. Theophylact - 11th c. Byzantine churchman
√ served in Constantinople as a royal tutor
√ archdeacon
√ renowned preacher
√ assistant to the Patriarch
√ in 1090 became Abp. and chief hierarch of Bulgarian Church
√ A year after Vol. I was published, Hieromonk Kallistos reposed, who from the start had encouraged the undertaking of translating and publishing these works in English.

Excepts from Vol. II and Vol. III
Blessed Theophylact's words are in asparagus green:

St. Mark 3:31-35
There came then His brethren and His mother, and standing without, sent unto Him calling Him.  And the multitude sat about Him, and they said unto Him, Behold, Thy mother and Thy brethren without seek for Thee.  And He answered them saying Who is My mother, or My brethren?  And He looked round about on them which sat about Him and said, Behold My mother and My brethren!   For whosoever shall do the will of God , the same is My brother, and My sister, and mother.
The brothers of the Lord out of envy approached to lay hold of Him as one who was "beside himself" and demon-possessed.   Vainglory perhaps had taken hold of His mother, and she came to draw Him away from His teaching, thus showing the multitude that she could lead around the One at Whom they marveled, and even make Him leave His teachingThe Lord therefore replies, "My mother will derive no benefit from being my mother unless she has the other virtues as well; likewise, neither will kinship of the flesh benefit My brothers."  For Christ's true kin are they who do the will of GodBy saying these things, the Lord is not thereby denying His mother, but He is showing that she will not be worthy of honor only because she gave Him birth, but because she also possesses every other virtueAnd if she does not have these virtues, others will be shown greater honor for their true kinship to Him.

St. Mark 4:1-2
And He began again to teach by the sea side: and there.  And there was gathered unto Him a great multitude, so that He entered into a boat and sat in it on the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land. And He taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in His doctrine.
Although He seemed to have dismissed His mother, He is again obedient to herFor it is for her sake that He left the house and went out along the seaHe sat in the boat so that, facing everyone, He could speak and all could hear, and no one would be behind His back.

In Volume III, Explanation of St. Luke, Blessed Theophylact contradicts himself commenting on Luke 1:46-50:
...And from henceforth, not only Elizabeth, but all generations of believers shall bless meWhy shall they bless me? Because of my virtueNo, but rather because God hath done to me great things...

Another place in Volume III commentary on Luke 11:27-32 Blessed Theophylact comments on the woman who raised up her voice and said "blessed are the paps that gave Thee suck":
...Where are those who say that Christ appeared on earth in imagination only?  Behold, even the breasts which he suckled as an infant bear witness.  He blesses those who keep the word of God, not excluding His mother from that blessing -- far from it ! -- but showing that even she would have received no benefit from giving birth to Him and suckling Him if she did not also possess every virtue...

In this comment on the blessed paps there is a gross understating of the worthiness of Theotokos.  She was not merely included in with the ones who hear the word and keep it.  She was and is the Prime Example.  Through a proper translation and by the Church's teachings, here's how I would understand Christ's answer to the woman of the company who lifted up her voice:

Yes, indeed blessed is My Mother's womb and Her paps.   Furthermore, She is even further blessed as the Archangel Gabriel announced.   She had always kept God's word.  Already she had found favor with God even before She heard the word from My angel and kept it by responding, "be it unto me according to thy word."  Anyone who hears the word of God and keeps it is My kin, and I give you My Mother as the perfect example of how to do this perfectly, without any errors.  With Her humility and obedience She annulled the curse of Eve.  She is My Mother, My Bride, and My Church, the Queen of Heaven higher than the angels.  Through Her I came to you today, and through Her I come to all future generations.  This is both a physical mystery [My Incarnation] and spiritual mystery [My Bride, the Church].  This is My Body, flesh from the Holy Virgin.  This is My Body, the Church, which I establish on earth for all who love Truth, that we may be members of One Body, My Body, of which I am the Head and you are the members, if you so choose to keep My words.  You, too can be my Mothers, Brothers, and Sisters by being obedient to God's word.

Now I want to go back to the first commentary I cited [on Mark 3:31-35] and make some serious contradictions:

Vainglory perhaps had taken hold of His mother, and she came to draw Him away from His teaching, thus showing the multitude that she could lead around the One at Whom they marveled, and even make Him leave His teaching.  This is unthinkable.  What mind could imagine this?

I can't consider anyone to be enlightened who would imagine that the Theotokos would even HAVE a vainglorious thought, let alone ACT on it!

How can B.T. think Christ really could have incarnated via the womb of one capable of such betrayal?  This would betray not just Christ, but the people He came to save, as well.  What, our Mother the show-off?  How can a show-off help us and save us?  This commentary alone causes me to reject B.T.  I trust nothing else he writes after seeing this.

But let me go back one more sentence in this same commentary, before I stop:

And if she does not have these virtues, others will be shown greater honor for their true kinship to HimOf course, this did not happen.  It could not happen.  Theotokos was born of a miracle conception, raised in the inner temple from age 3, and fed manna by an angel.  The only life that might be similar to this is St. John the Baptist.  Does Blessed Theophylact teach that She only obtained virtue AFTER a giving a virgin birth?  That's what it sounds like he's trying to say.
And that is absurd.
She assisted Christ in His ministry, Her virtues were sealed as was Her virginity, Her fruits are the many saved souls - and this continues after the Ascension - after the Ascension the Apostles looked to Her as their guide. Nobody ever out-shines Her in virtue.  She did not sin.  She was not above temptation, but in every temptation She always chose to serve the Word of God.

The RocorMP Church in House Springs, associated with the Chrysostom Press, which published this series, went with the RocorMP union.

Who is the hieromonk Kallistos who encouraged this?  Is he that same Timothy Kallistos Ware, the renovationist, who is at the top of world Orthodoxy?

Bishop Alypy also went with the RocorMP union, and some suspect him of being a KGB collaborator.

Blessed Theophylact is "blessed" and not glorified [not canonized as a saint].

See St. Cyril's commentary on St. Luke:

"...Now let not any one imagine that Christ spurned the honour due to His mother, or contemptuously disregarded the love owed  to His brethren...  In order then that Christ may win us all unto obedience, He promises us surpassing honours, and deigns us the highest love, saying, "My mother and My brethren are those who hear the word of God and do it." For who among men is so obdurate and ungentle, as to refuse to honour, and accord the most complete love to his mother and brethren? For the all-powerful law of nature, even without our will, obliges us to this. When therefore, bowing our neck to the Saviour's commands, we become His followers, and so are in the relation of a mother and brethren to Him, ..."

molonlabe70.blogspot.com

Website Review

Yesterday I did some googling on St. Brigid, and I found two posts in the very popular world-Orthodox site of a..sinner,  molonlabe70.  This site has a collection of selected Orthodox treasures, writings of Holy Fathers and many lives of saints.

Typical of world-Orthodoxy a..sinner defends the use of the new calendar and accuses the old calendarists of being "schismatics" and says they are "not canonical."

However, molonabe's main argument for the new calendar seems to be that the only alternative [super-correct disease] is far worse.  Untypical of a world-Orthodox site, there are some posts on the end times and against ecumenism; and even one post that has caught a glimpse of the Royal Path: http://molonlabe70.blogspot.com/2010/01/ecumenism-and-schismatic-old.html   In this article we can see the frustration of a sincere soul trying to choose between the two extremes of world-Orthodoxy and "true" Orthodoxy [i.e., renovationism and super-correct].

I did notice, though, in the sidebar, there is a listing of Orthodox Churches in Las Vegas.  Every Orthodox Church in Las Vegas is listed except the one with the myrrh-streaming icon of St. Nicholas.

It is good that the Sister Churches, the Royal Path Churches, are not considered members of the world-Orthodoxy club.

I hope everyone who reads this and who has a chance to visit Las Vegas will go venerate this holy icon and receive the blessing of being in the presence of a heavenly manifestation on earth.
